What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil. Clogged pores can lead to outbreaks of lesions, also known as zits or pimples. While it is common for them to appear on your face, acne can also be present on the back, chest and shoulders. Acne is most common among teenagers and young adults, however some people find themselves with acnes in their late thirties and forties. There are a variety of acne treatments that you can receive, however you must be persistent as acne is a tedious skin condition.

Acne is most common among teenagers because of the hormonal fluctuations that occur during that stage of life. Hormonal fluctuations cause the body to secret excess oils that cause the pores to get clogged. Bacterial infections can also lead to an outbreak of acne. Cleanliness and hygiene play a huge role in minimizing acne.

While acne can be caused by external factors, our genes play a role in whether we have acne or not. WHile there are no acne causing genes, genetics can play a role in whether your skin is more prone to acne. Studies have shown that people with first degree relatives who have adult acne, such as parents or siblings, are more likely to have it themselves when they become an adult.
