Summer is here and the sun is hot and bright. Even though we should be wearing sunscreen every day of the year, it’s so important to make sure you’re extra protected during these long days when the sun is at its strongest.
Why is Sunscreen so Important?
According to dermatologists, sunscreen is a step that you should never skip. Sunscreen is a tool that helps in fighting against skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. It protects you from the sun’s powerful UV rays that can create painful sunburns, premature signs of aging, such as dark spots and wrinkles.

What to Look for

- Sun Protection Factor (SPF)– If you’re reading this blog, you may have had no idea that SPF stands for sun protection factor. It is recommended that the protection level is 30 or higher. The higher the SPF, the more protection you’ll get, but as you go even higher the smaller the difference becomes.
- “Broad Spectrum” protection– If the bottle in your hand has this label, this means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. All sunscreens will protect you from UVB. These UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn and some skin cancers.
- “Water Resistant” – A water resistance sunscreens does not mean they are waterproof or sweat proof. Sunscreens that are water-resistant must have a claim on the label showing how long it lasts for. For best results, reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours. If you’re constantly sweating or getting in and out of the pool, towel drying yourself off, sunscreen should be applied even more often.
How to Choose and Use the Best for your Skin
Mineral vs. Chemcial Sunscreen
There are two types of sunscreen to choose from – mineral sunscreen, also known as a physical sunscreen, and chemical sunscreen. Mineral sunscreen helps protect your skin from the sun in different ways, but both are effective for protecting against UVA and UVB rays.
Mineral sunscreen reflects UV rays when applied as directed. Chemical sunscreens on the other hand absorb the UV rays. These filters absorb the rays before they can damage the skin.
Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreen Ingredients
The main difference between the two types of sunscreen is their active ingredients. For mineral sunscreens, the active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Whereas physical sunscreen, the active ingredients include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
When in doubt, choose a lotion. Some of us like to opt for different types of sunscreens such as sticks or sprays. Did you know stick sunscreens require at least 4 swipes for it to be effective? And many sprays are inconsistent. Now, these aren’t bad, they just require a little more attention. If you opt for a spray, be sure to spray an even coat and rub it in.
If you have sensitive skin or are acne-prone, the best type of sunscreen to use would be the mineral “physical” sunscreen. Other skin types can use either type of sunscreen.
I suggest mineral sunscreens for all skin types. Mineral sunscreens are a more “natural” product that helps keep our oceans clean. Why not opt for mineral-based?
Treatment for Sunburns
For those of you that still fear sunburn, there is no need to worry! There are natural remedies to help soothe and heal your skin.
One of the most common remedies is aloe vera. It has anti-inflammatory properties and aids in rehydrating the skin. After that first day or two, after your sunburn doesn’t hurt, I would recommend using the Honey & Aloe Vera body scrub. This gentle scrub exfoliates the skin without causing any discomfort and locking in moisture.
The other natural remedy I would recommend throughout your sunburn is Moringa Oil. You can apply this oil to the skin as much as needed. Especially during the stages that your sunburn is peeling. It is extremely moisturizing because it contains fatty acids.
